Although there are no winter headlines expected in our area anytime soon, there will be new “terminology” to know for this upcoming winter.
This winter [2024/25] you will not hear wind chill advisory or wind chill warnings. The temperature (without wind) and the wind chill are both being incorporated into a Cold Weather Advisory, Extreme Cold warning, and Extreme Cold Watch. These changes are nationwide.

Wind Chill advisory used to be issued for wind chills -25F to -39F
Wind Chill warnings used to be issued for wind chills -40F or lower
Now….
Cold weather advisory for temperature or wind chills -30 or lower
Extreme Cold Warning for temperature or wind chills -40 or lower.
This is our criteria for NWS Grand Forks. The farther south you go of course criteria changes.
