MINNEAPOLIS – Roseville, Minnesota native Niko Medved has been named the new head coach of Golden Gophers men’s basketball by Athletic Director Mark Coyle pending Board of Regents approval and a background check.
The university says his contract is for six years, but haven’t released how much money it’s for.
“I want to thank President Rebecca Cunningham, Mark Coyle and everyone involved in the search, as this really is a dream job for me. I loved my time at Colorado State, and I worked with tremendous people who made a lasting impact on my life. Those are memories that I will cherish forever,” Medved said.
Medved led the Rams to a Mountain West Tournament Championship this year and Colorado State won their first round NCAA Tournament game against the Memphis Tigers. The Rams competed in the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four years. Medved’s head coaching record at Furman, Drake and Colorado State is 222-172.
Medved earned his bachelor’s and masters degree from the University of Minnesota. He was an assistant for the Gophers during the 2006-2007 season under head coach Dan Monson. Medved also served as student manager under Head Coach Clem Haskins in the 1990s.
“This is an exciting day for our program, our University and our state. He is extremely passionate about coaching and developing young men and takes great pride in being from Minnesota,” Coyle said.
