MOORHEAD, Minn. – Concordia College is one of six schools that will take part in a women’s flag football league though a partnership with the Minnesota Vikings.
Leading Concordia’s team is Cobber women’s soccer assistant coach Breanna Nelson, a 2024 Concordia College graduate and 2020 Davies High School graduate.
“I’m a lifelong football fan, but there’s always been a disconnect with no girls or women. I’m excited that our students are getting this incredible chance to step out onto the field and compete in a new way,” Nelson said.
The Vikings, with support of the NFL, will contribute $140,000 to support the league and participating schools.
“We are excited to partner with the Minnesota Vikings in starting women’s flag football this spring. Numbers are growing rapidly around the state, and we want to be a pioneer for this emerging sport. I want to thank the Vikings for the time and resources they have contributed to helping us launch a new program,” Concordia College Director of Athletics Rachel Bergeson said.
Other schools taking part in the league are Bethel University, Gustavus Adolphus College, University of Northwestern St. Paul, Augustana University and University of Wisconsin Stout. The Cobbers will begin practicing March 17.
“This is a significant moment for the continued growth of girls and women’s flag football. These six institutions are set to do something unique, and their partnership with the Vikings and the NFL will bring further awareness to the future of women’s football and empower the next generation of athletes to find opportunities to compete and shape this game,” Vikings Vice President of Social Impact Brett Taber said.
Teams will compete in April in jamborees at the University of Northwestern St. Paul and the University of Wisconsin Stout. A championship tournament will be hosted at Vikings headquarters in Eagan, Minnesota.
