Suspect in substation attacks pleads guilty to shooting energy facility in North and South Dakota

RAY, ND — A Canadian man is facing 20-years in prison after a North Dakota court found he damaged an energy substation.

Cameron Monte Smith pled guilty to two charges of destruction of an energy facility, one in North Dakota and the other in South Dakota. Court Documents say Smith damaged the substations by using a high-powered rifle.

“This defendant deliberately and very violently attacked our nation’s energy infrastructure,” U.S. State’s Attorney Mac Schneider said. “Our law enforcement partners put an end to those attacks, and this guilty plea provides a measure of accountability for the defendant’s actions and extensive damage he caused. Our career prosecutors and colleagues in the District of South Dakota deserve credit for working cooperatively to ensure this defendant faced justice in federal court.”

A sentencing date is yet to be set.
