(Fargo, ND) — Retired NASA astronaut and North Dakota native James Buchli on Tuesday became the 49th recipient of the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award.
“NASA really allowed us to become team players. As you might imagine working together for a year for a flight with a crew you become one,” said Buchli.
The Rough Rider Award recognizes North Dakotans who “have been influenced by this state in achieving national recognition in their fields of endeavor, thereby reflecting credit and honor upon North Dakota and its citizens.”
Governor Burgum presented the award to Buchli at UND.
Buchli flew on four Space Shuttle missions.
The native of New Rockford also served as a Marine aviator.
He served a one year tour of duty during the Vietnam War.
