ND State officials: Train carrying hazardous materials derails near Carrington

CARRINGTON, ND — No injuries are reported after a train pulling cars filled with hazardous material derailed and burst into flames before dawn yesterday in Foster County.

State Department of Environmental Quality officials say it happened around 3:45 a.m. in some sparsely populated farmland about 140 miles northwest of Fargo. The damaged cars reportedly released ammonia, sulfur and methanol into the atmosphere. However, officials say, favorable winds kept the hazardous gases away from populated areas.

Canadian Pacific Railway is cooperating with Foster County emergency officials for an investigation and cleanup.

There was also a temporary flight restriction put in place for 24 hours, beginning at 4 p.m Saturday. As of this publication, only emergency aircraft can be used in the area.

The cause is of the derailment is under investigation.
