Minot City Council opts to retain interim chief, forgoing former West Fargo chief

(MINOT, ND) – Former West Fargo Police Chief Denis Otterness will not be serving as the interim police chief in Minot.

That’s the decision of the Minot City Council after its regular meeting.

At the meeting, council members decided on keeping current interim chief, Captain Dale Plessas, as the interim chief while a replacement is found.

Council Vice-President Lisa Olson said she believed Otterness ‘would be the right choice.’

“I think that he is very capable of taking this position,” she said. “But I don’t think it is the right time.”

Olson said that, based on recent events involving members of the department, that keeping Plessas on as the interim chief ‘would be the best for the morale, and the healing, of the police department.’

City Manager Harold Klug reminded council members that it would take between three and six months to conduct a nationwide search.

The council approved retaining Plessas 5-2, with councilman Mark Jantzer and Mayor Tom Ross voting no.
