(NEW TOWN, ND) – The leader of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation (MHA Nation) says North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum will serve the country well as the Secretary of the Interior, should the United States Senate confirm President-Elect Donald Trump’s pick.
The Secretary of the Interior leads agencies such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).
MHA Nation Chairman Mark Fox says Burgum understands the needs of tribal nations.
“He’s familiar with the issues. He’s familiar with the concerns and problems that we confront,” Fox told WDAY Radio Midday on Wednesday. “He is particularly knowledgeable, having that experience with our tribes, the dilemma that many of our tribes experience working under the federal system.”
He says the issues range from healthcare, to issues with BIA, along with the regulations facing tribal nations.
“He (Burgum) is very concerned with them. He understands red tape bureaucracy,” Fox said. “He understands, on his own state level. He’s cut through that to make the state of North Dakota one of the wealthiest states in all of the United States.”
Burgum’s work with tribal nations in North Dakota has positioned them to be the best in the nation, Fox alluded.
