FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – Two men found guilty in a northern Minnesota human smuggling case where a family from India died while crossing the U.S. Canada border in winter file paperwork to have the verdict reconsidered.
Lawyers for Harshkumar Patel and Steve Shand filed motions in U.S. District Court in Fergus Falls on Friday. A federal jury found the two men guilty in November, but their attorneys claim that there was not enough evidence to convict Patel and Shand. They want the court to grant new trials or acquit both men of the charges.
Patel and Shand are supposed to be sentenced in March.
