Cold Weather Rule in effect for Minnesota residential utility customers

(ST PAUL) – An annual state law protecting residential utility customers goes into effect today. The Cold Weather Rule, which is in effect from October 1 through April 30 annually, protects residential utility customers from having their electric or natural gas service shut off. The customer and utility provider must agree upon a payment plan, and it must be ‘reasonable’ for the household’s financial circumstances, according to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission.
