Bill to expand Turtle Mountain gambling operations to Grand Forks County dies

(BISMARCK, ND)  —  A bill that would have enabled the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa to expand its gambling operations beyond traditional boundaries is dead for now.

State officials say Senate Bill 2376 included language limiting Turtle Mountain’s current geographical footprint.  Under the current statue, the band is permitted to operate only “on land within Rolette County held in trust for the band” following passage of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988.”  Had SB 2376 bee passed and enacted, that geographical reference would have encompassed “land within Grand Forks County.”
