(DALLAS, TEXAS) – The company in charge of a Texas cheer competition that saw a scare when a possible active shooter was reported is now looking at its protocols.
Flag Family News previously reported that group of 50 cheerleaders from a Fargo-based cheer program were in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday when chaos erupted inside the Kay Bailey Convention Center. Thousands were at the event. Police eventually said an investigation determined a fight between two people led to multiple poles being knocked down, causing a loud noise. Multiple injuries occurred, police said.
At the time, Varsity Brands, which runs the NCA All-Star National Championship, said their team ‘regularly assesses procedures, incorporates feedback and enlists the aid of security professionals to ensure best practices are in place.’
Now, they’re taking new actions.
“We are taking immediate action to further enhance safety at our competitions, including increased police presence, deploying weapon detection technology, and continuing to enforce a strict zero-tolerance policy for misconduct,” Brian Bianco, Senior Director for Strategic Communications at Varsity Brands told Flag Family News in a written statement. “Additionally, we are providing counseling resources, ticket refunds and a virtual competition opportunity for teams unable to compete due to the disruption.”
He calls the events of March 1 ‘deeply unsettling,’ and says the company remains ‘committed to supporting those affected while reinforcing the security measures at our competitions.’
“We are grateful for the strength and resilience of the cheer community and will continue working closely with security professionals, venue partners, and law enforcement to ensure that Varsity Spirit events remain a safe and supportive place for young athletes to compete and grow,” Bianco said.
