Nebraska likely to keep current electoral system instead of winner-take-all alternative proposed by GOP lawmakers

LINCOLN, NE — Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen likely won’t call a special session to consider changing his state’s electoral system to winner take all.

This comes after one GOP state lawmaker declined to flip his vote. Pillen said he’s worked relentlessly to secure a majority vote to turn the state into a winner take all before the election in November and he’s disappointed they won’t get it done. The current system splits its five votes — with two going to the winner of the popular vote, and the other three are linked to the three congressional districts.

One district always trends Democrat, which if it plays out, would give Kamala Harris one electoral vote in what’s expected to be an extremely tight race.
