Xcel Energy rate hikes take effect

UNITED STATES – An interim rate hike has taken effect for Xcel Energy customers in the new year.

The increase taking effect New Year’s Day is 5.2 percent or $5.40 a month.

The rate hike comes as the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission considers a two-year rate hike program. The first year increase would be 9.6 percent and the second year would total another 3.6 percent. If the rates the commission ultimately approve are lower than the interim rates, customers would be given a refund.
