Prosecutors Could Rest Fergus Falls Human Smuggling Case Thursday

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – Federal prosecutors are getting closer to resting their case against two men accused of being part of a human smuggling ring in Minnesota.

Steve Shand and Hari Patel are facing several charges related to smuggling migrants from India into the U.S. The jury in Fergus Falls heard testimony Wednesday from a 23-year-old man who was forced to walk across the Canadian border in a blizzard in 2022.

A family of four died during the journey and the witness said he had to walk five or six hours before he finally found a van driven by one of the defendants.

Prosecutors are hoping to call their final witness sometime Thursday.
