ND Senate votes down bill prohibiting felons from claiming self defense

BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota lawmakers can’t agree on a proposal to prohibit felons from claiming self-defense.

The Senate struck down the House bill introduced by Dem-NPL State Representative Mary Schneider of Fargo in a 40 to six vote.

Those against it say it would be un-American to take away a felon’s right to claim self-defense in a confrontation involving the use of a gun. Supporters argue the bill targets specific scenarios of a felon intentionally using guns unlawfully.
