SAINT PAUL, Minn. – A bill in the Minnesota Senate would give a grant to help build a chapel and parking lot at Fargo National Cemetery.
The one-time funding would be given from the general fund to the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard in fiscal year 2026.
DFL State Senator Rob Kupec of Moorhead, who authored the bill, says the amount of money for the grant is still under consideration. He adds even though the cemetery is in North Dakota, it still serves Western Minnesotans.
The North Dakota Senate unanimously passed a bill in February for a $3 million line of credit for a building at the Fargo National Cemetery. It’s now in the House Appropriations Committee.
The cemetery has held funerals during winter without anything but a tent to block the cold and snow. The only bathrooms are porta-potties.
Jason Hicks with the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard says North Dakota Senator John Hoeven is working directly with Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins who has committed to help advance upgrades at the cemetery.
The honor guard has raised more than $1.5 million in private donations for the building. Click here to donate.
