MN lawmakers push to lower teacher retirement age

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota lawmakers are considering a bipartisan plan to let teachers retire earlier with full pensions.

One proposal would allow full retirement at age 60 costing taxpayers an estimated $240 million a year. Two cheaper alternatives would either lower the full pension age to 62 or allow partial pensions at 60.

Supporters say the move could save money long-term by replacing higher-paid retirees with younger educators.

Teachers unions back the earliest retirement option, but funding remains a key hurdle.
