WASHINGTON – More than 300 students from University of Mary in Bismarck, members of the Diocese of Fargo and Diocese of Bismarck and students from all Catholic schools in North Dakota are in Washington, DC for the March For Life.
UMary President Monsignor James Patrick Shea says his school has its largest contingent ever at the event. That includes more than in 2017 when the university led the march. Shea says during the last election cycle, Democrats made abortion access a pillar of its campaign. He believes there was a distancing for some Republicans where protection for unborn life was taken out of their platforms. He credits Father Dominic Bouck for getting students ready to rally in Washington.
“In that kind of atmosphere in which it was beginning to feel like defense of unborn human life was a losing issue, he wanted to make sure that our students stood up for life like never before because the unborn child is voiceless and needs someone to speak up for her,” Shea said.
Shea feels encouragement that those in power in our nation’s capitol are for abortion protection. That includes Vice President JD Vance who spoke at the March For Life.
“I think it’s important from a political, but also a moral standpoint, pro lifers aren’t invisible and those who are in public service know how present we are and how deeply we care not just about unborn children, but their mothers as well,” Shea said.
