Inmate back in custody after Williams Co. Correctional Center officials handed them over to person impersonating ICE agent

WILLISTON, N.D. – A person is back in custody after officials at the Williams County Correctional Center in Williston handed them over to someone impersonating an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent.

The Williams County Sheriff’s Office says a person authorities have not identified was taken into custody January 22 on driving under suspension charges and held on detainer for ICE. February 11, immigration officials notified the sheriffs office an agent would take the inmate for immigration processing. Twenty minutes after handing them over to what deputies believed was an agent, the correctional center determined they were not an ICE agent and found the inmate. They were taken to the Ward County Detention Center in Minot. The Sheriff’s Office has not said how long it took to find the inmate.

The person claiming to be an ICE agent was arrested and charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer.

“Leadership has taken corrective action to reinforce existing policies and procedures regarding Correctional Center security and unauthorized access,” the Williams County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
