Ian Cramer, son of ND Senator, sentenced for his role in deputy’s death

STANTON, N.D. – Ian Cramer, the son of North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for his role in the death of Mercer County Deputy Paul Martin.

In December of 2023 Cramer stole his mother’s vehicle from a Bismarck hospital leading to a chase where he rammed the vehicle into Martin’s squad car hitting and killing him.

Cramer plead guilty to homicide while fleeing a peace officer, reckless endangerment, meth, cocaine and marijuana possession and other charges in September after originally pleading not guilty.

In July on WDAY Radio Senator Cramer called Deputy Martin a hero.

“As tragic as it was, and as unnecessary as it was for him to lose his life, in the act of stopping Ian, he probably saved my son’s life. That is kind of an overwhelming thought,” Cramer said.

We reached out to Senator Cramer for a statement following his son’s sentencing, but haven’t heard back.
