Health insurance through the ACA to go up as much as 16.5 percent next year in ND

NORTH DAKOTA – North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread says it’s the first time in his nearly eight years in office that all health insurance plans purchased through the Affordable Care Act will see increased premiums.

For 2025 individual plans next year Sanford Health plans will go up 16.5 percent, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota rates will go up 15.94 percent and Medica plans will go up 4.6 percent.

Next year’s changes for the small group market includes a 15.3 percent for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, a 10.51 percent increase for Sanford Health, a 9.54 percent increase for UnitedHealthcare and 6.38 percent increase for Medica. HealthPartners withdrew from the market for 2025.

“Insurance is a pool of funds that needs to be filled at a faster pace than what is being released. Because of the pace in costs imposed by healthcare providers and facilities, the pool is being drained at an unsustainable pace,” Godfread said. “High costs impact those who purchase their health insurance, and it affects businesses in the state who offer health insurance as an employee benefit.”

Open enrollment lasts until January 15th.
