Hankinson teacher resigns amid investigation into messages with a student

HANKINSON, N.D. – A former Hankinson High School science teacher is being investigated by law enforcement over messages that the educator allegedly exchanged with a student.

Although the content of the messages is unknown, the public school district says Zach Nelson resigned on Friday Mar. 21.

The School Board accepted the resignation at a special meeting the following Monday.

“To avoid harming that investigation, I am unable to share any further information, evidence, or details that are not yet publicly available,” Hankinson Public Schools Superintendent Chad Benson wrote in a statement posted on the district Facebook page.

“The school will be cooperative with law enforcement to the greatest extent possible,” Benson added.

Richland County Sheriff Gary Ruhl tells Flag Family News that Nelson has not been arrested or charged, and has no other comment about the investigation.
