(FARGO, ND) – Court documents are shedding more light into the fatal hit-and-run accident Monday morning in the City of Fargo.
According to a declaration of probable cause in the case, obtained by WDAY Radio News, 23-year-old Alex Cruz was involved in a hit-and-run crash in the intersection of 53rd Avenue South and 38th Street South at approximately 6:25 a.m. Monday. The pedestrian he hit died as a result of the injuries she sustained in the crash.
A witness described the vehicle as a Dodge Charger, light in color. Fargo Police were able to provide footage of the vehicle fleeing the scene of the crash at the next intersection, and Highway Patrol records indicated that a Dodge Charger, registered to Cruz, matched the description of the vehicle. Cruz lived approximately three blocks from the crash. His vehicle was located at his employer’s building, and a Highway Patrol Trooper discovered the vehicle had damage consistent with a pedestrian crash.
Once Cruz was located, he was advised of his Miranda warning.
He stated he was late for work, looked down to get his phone from his center console and struck something. He said it was difficult to see due to excessively tinted windows. He stated he believed he had struck a deer, and did not stop and check on what he had struck, but instead left the scene.
Cruz has been charged with Class B Felony Duty in Accident Involving Death or Personal Injury, and Class B Misdemeanor Driving Under Suspension.
Cruz appeared in Cass County District Court Thursday and Judge Connie Cleveland set bond at $50,000. He remains in the Cass County Jail.
He’s due back in court January 30 for a preliminary hearing.
