FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – Newly filed court documents are shedding some light on what led up to a deadly hit-and-run in downtown Fargo.
Jeremey Jorgenson, 42, is now charged with duty in an accident involving death.
Authorities said they found the driver two days after the crash, but they did not announce an arrest or charges.
The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. on Mar. 12, 2025 at the intersection of 10th St. N. and NP Ave. It killed 61-year-old Bernd Scholz, who had been riding his bicycle in the area earlier.
Several people witnessed the hit-and-run. Two other vehicles were sitting at a red light, next to Jorgenson, at the intersection.
Witnesses said Scholz was on the ground in front of their vehicles, sitting up with his bike next to him. They say it’s unclear why he was on the ground at this point, but that he looked like he was in pain.
According to court papers, witnesses said Scholz was directly in front of Jorgenson’s vehicle, about a foot away.
When the light turned green, witnesses said Jorgenson tried to go. However, his vehicle rolled back when he hit Scholz. Court records say he gave it more gas and ran Scholz over, going over his chest.
Witnesses stopped and went to help Scholz. However, one of the witnesses followed Jorgenson and called police when he pulled into a residence.
Two days later, authorities met with Jorgenson again. Jorgenson told them he thought he hit a pothole and denied backing up.
Charges were filed Tuesday, April 1, 2025, nearly three weeks after the crash.
