Call to Moorhead High School Career Academy began as stolen gun call

(MOORHEAD, MINN) – Moorhead Police have released more information about this morning’s incident at the Moorhead High School Career Academy.

According to the Moorhead Police Department, the incident began as a call for a stolen handgun in the 500 block of 32nd Avenue South. The victim, a 25-year-old male, said a 17-year-old male was at his apartment, and when he left, the suspect took an unsecured handgun from the victim’s bedroom.

Police attempted to locate the suspect at his residence and then notified Moorhead Area Public Schools of the situation. A short time later, Moorhead Area Public Schools notified police that the suspect was seen in the Career Academy building, where he was located and taken into custody without incident. The handgun was not displayed, and no known threats of violence were made. The intent of the situation is under investigation.

The 17-year-old male is being held at the Clay County Regional Detention Center and a long-form complaint is being sent to the Clay County Attorney’s Office for felony theft, possession and bringing the gun into a school. The unsecured gun will be reviewed for possible charges, the police department said.
