SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota lawmakers are looking into changing who would qualify for free school meals.
Republican State Representative Andrew Myers of Tonka Bay introduced a bill that would only allow families whose income is below 500 percent of the federal poverty level to get free meals. He said constituents are concerned about possible budget cuts.
“I think about the kids that have chronic illnesses myself that rely on nutrition,” said DFL State Representative María Isa Pérez-Vega of St. Paul. “And here we are valuing the nutrition rates of those children based off our salaries when the word of God and Allah is to feed and provide.”
Meals at Minnesota schools have been free for almost two years.
