WASHINGTON – Minnesota Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar introduces a bill designed to counter President Donald Trump’s plans to deport undocumented immigrants.
The Neighbors Not Enemies Act repeals the 1798 Alien Enemies Act giving the president the ability to detain and deport foreign nationals determined to be threats to the country. Omar warns the 1798 law is used to target immigrants based on their nationalities. It’s the fourth time that she has introduced the measure.
The bill has also been introduced in the Senate by Democratic Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono.
The bills are not expected to advance in Congress considering Republicans control the House and Senate.
