BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong reacts to bill passed in the North Dakota House that would raise the state’s gas tax by three cents per gallon.
“We’re over $2 billion walking into this legislative session. Someone would have to really give me a compelling argument that we would need to raise taxes anywhere right now,” Armstrong said.
The legislation was last heard by the Senate Finance and Taxation committee March 24.
Republican State Representative Jared Hagert of Emerado says he introduced the bill because he says the legislature has been using special funds to fund road projects. He adds the only stable, reliable funding option available to the legislature is the fuel tax.
