$112 million of federal money to be used for MN’s Energy Assistance Program

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announces $112 million in federal funds will be used for the Minnesota Energy Assistance Program.

The money will give energy assistance to income-eligible homeowners and renters to keep their homes warm in the winter.

“In our coldest months, higher utility bills can put a strain on Minnesotans’ budgets,” said Governor Walz. “Our Energy Assistance Program makes a big difference in alleviating this pressure, ensuring that Minnesotans get the help they need to make it comfortably through the winter. This funding will continue to lower costs and keep Minnesotans safe.”

The governor’s office says last year the program helped 129,500 households with energy assistance giving $95 million with the average household benefit of $736.

Minnesota’s Commerce Department says state funding prevented energy shutoffs for 43,000 households, provided emergency heating fuel deliveries to more than 10,000 homes and funded emergency furnace repairs to 6,600 homes.
