(BISMARCK, ND) — A bill in the North Dakota legislature would call for more than $200 million to address homelessness in the state.
Senate Bill 2030, introduced by Legislative Management, would call for $10 million for the purpose of providing homeless grants for the 2025-27 biennium, $50,000 for one-time funding for a homelessness study by the North Dakota Housing and Finance Agency, $1 million for the Department of Public Instruction to provide grants for homelessness liaison services to the 10 school districts with the greatest student enrollment and $200 million in transfers to the housing incentive fund to be distributed over a four-year period beginning on July 1, 2025.
Fargo Mayor Dr. Tim Mahoney is supporting the bill. If passed, Mahoney says his administration could renovate a historic building at 69 Fourth Street North, which is next to the Fargo Housing and Redevelopment Authority, into 22 units of low-income, service-supported housing. The funding would come via workforce incentives, state grants and new contracting opportunities.
A hearing on the bill will be held Tuesday in front of the Senate Appropriations – Education and Environment Division committee.
