WASHINGTON – North Dakota Republican Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer introduce a bill to allow people with concealed carry permits in their home state to use them in any other state allowing the process.
Hoeven’s office says it was important that the bill protects states’ rights by not making a national standard for concealed carry and instead treating the permits like drivers’ licenses by allowing them to work across state lines while still having gun owners follow that state’s law.
Hoeven has cosponsored this bill every year since 2015.
“This legislation empowers law-abiding citizens to more freely exercise their Second Amendment rights when traveling across state lines. Under our bill, individuals that have been granted a concealed carry permit in their home state will be able to use that permit in any other state that allows concealed carry, making it easier to travel while still respecting laws passed on the state level,” Hoeven said.
The bill is endorsed by the National Rifle Association, the National Shooting Sports Foundation and Gun Owners of America.
Recently two Texas truckers and the Liberty Justice Center sued the state of Minnesota to allow them to carry guns using permits in other states. They say Minnesota violates the second amendment by not honoring gun permits issued in 29 other states.
