Minnesota contracts third party to lower influx of drugs in state prisons

ST. PAUL, MN — The Minnesota prison system is implementing a new policy to stop inmates from getting drugs in their mail.

The Department of Corrections has given a Maryland company a 540-thousand dollar contract to screen all incoming mail. Beginning today, the mail will be examined and copied, with the copies sent back to the inmate.

Prison officials say the move will cut down on contraband and increase safety for inmates and staff.
