Investigation underway after Grand Forks Public Schools reports $2.2 million fraud case

(GRAND FORKS) – Grand Forks Police, along with the United States Secret Service, are working to investigate a case of financial fraud involving Grand Forks Public Schools. The police report says the district was defrauded out of more than $2.2 million.

Lieutenant Andrew Stein confirmed the investigation is underway. A police report says Grand Forks Public Schools reported the fraud just after noon Wednesday as a case of wire fraud.

Stein says the investigation is ongoing. He says the type of fraud experienced by Grand Forks Public Schools ‘is relatively common and getting more sophisticated with the technology the scammers are using.’

“This matter has been turned over to the Grand Forks Police Department and the United States Secret Service for investigation,” Melissa Bakke, Communications and Marketing Manager for Grand Forks Public Schools, said in a statement. “Grand Forks Public School cannot comment any further, as this is an active investigation.”
