Malfunctioning lithium e-bike battery sparks fire

(FARGO) – Fire crews responded to a water flow alarm activation at 2:06 p.m.

The alarm activation was at an apartment building in the 1700 block of 35th Street South. Crews detected smoke in the unit where the alarm originated and upgraded the call to a full structure fire response. As they entered the apartment, crews discovered that a fire had been extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system, preventing significant fire damage.

Fire officials say the fire was caused by a malfunctioning lithium battery for an electric bike, which was charging at the time of the incident.
