Fargo’s overall crime rate decreased in 2024, police chief says

(FARGO, ND) – Crime is down in Fargo.

Police Chief David Zibolski told the Fargo City Commission on Monday that, while overall crime is down nearly seven percent in the city, some areas are continuing to rise.

For example, he said that rapes are up 27 percent compared to 2023. The City also saw six homicides in 2024, compared to just two in 2023.

“The only good thing that we can say about that is all of them are cleared,” Zibolski said regarding the homicide data.

He said that the department is looking closer at the rape statistics, saying there are some issues with the city’s statutes relating to prosecution of the crimes. He said, however, that approximately 54 of the cases involved known persons.

Arson, burglary, assaults and motor vehicle thefts are all down, while shoplifting has increased.

“Shoplifiting and theft are the highest volume crimes that we’re seeing across our city,” Zibolski said.

Shots fired cases are up 12 percent, from 23 cases in 2023 to 26 cases in 2024. Of those 26 cases last year, five of the incidents have been cleared. The highest number of shots fired cases was 38 in 2022.
