Scott Hennen’s conversation with Governor Kelly Armstrong
BISMARCK, N.D. – North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong believes a property tax bill could get the amount of relief increased when lawmakers discuss it in a conference committee.
The House bill passed giving $1,450 in a primary tax credit which Armstrong proposed. The Senate bill gives a $1,250 credit and includes a provision that homeowners would pay some tax. Armstrong believes the committee could discuss making the primary tax credit increase over time. Both versions cap spending at three percent of growth for local political subdivisions.
“I don’t think there’s real debate anymore about really putting the reform into place which will help curb the unfettered growth of property tax statements,” Armstrong explained.
The governor says he’s meeting with the Office of Management and budget, Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus, and legislative leaders to make sure everyone has the same information before the conference committee meets.
